FROM THE TRIBUNE DEMOCRAT – Few people may recognize the name Kyra Schon.

But many fans of the horror movies know her as Karen Cooper, the 11-year-old girl who ate her father’s corpse in the 1968 zombie movie “Night of the Living Dead.”

Schon was in Windber on Saturday for DraculaCon III, hosted by moviemaker Blair Murphy at the Grand Midway Hotel.

The event combined music and lectures on the role of spirits, the undead and the supernatural plays in literature, movies and pop culture.

Schon said she is surprised that “Night of the Living Dead” remains popular. The movie, directed by George A. Romero, was filmed in black and white.

“I really am surprised, although it’s a classic now,” said Schon, 53, a Pittsburgh native.
